Yuck!: Plastic Surgery Graduation Gift...For Teens

MSNBC just published this story about parents buying plastic surgery for their high school grads. I was highly disturbed. I guess it illustrates the marketing of evil and the objectivization of the body. Not only has our youth generation swallowed the lie hook, line and sinker but our parents did it first. Any parent that give their kid cosmetic surgery for a graduation present has to be pretty sick.

The beginning of the story:
When Courtney Powers graduated from high school last year, she didn’t receive a new computer or a trip to Europe. The North Carolina teen got a pair of D-cup breast implants.

“My breasts hadn’t grown since I was 16,” says Powers, who underwent cosmetic surgery two days after her 18th birthday. “I was a 36AA and my mom and dad knew I was very self-conscious.”

Powers earned half the money for the surgery by working at a bowling alley and baby-sitting. Her parents chipped in the rest as a graduation gift. Keep reading...

Hi everybody!
I want to invite you to the first ever Catholic-Protestant dialogue
involving the Augustine Institute. On Thursday, March 29th,
7:00-9:00pm at the House of Ss. Peter and Paul (2590 S. Race St.
Denver, CO 80210) students of the Augustine Institute and Denver
Seminary (an evangelical insititution) will meet to discuss
theological questions surrounding our understanding of the Bible.

Topics to be discussed include: What is the relationship of Scripture
and Theology? What does it mean for the biblical text to be
authoritative? How do you know the books in the Bible are biblical,
i.e. canonical? etc.

A little background: Dr. Don Payne of Den Sem, Dr. Tim Gray, Mike
Hemenway (a Denver Sem student) and myself met about 6 weeks ago to
plan this event. Our hope is to share thoughts on issues of theology,
biblical hermeneutics and evangelism in order that our parallel
theological communities at Den Sem and AI can benefit one another
through our dialogue. As Vatican II stated in "Unitatis
Redintegratio," one of the intiatives of the ecumenical movement is
"'dialogue' between competent experts from different Churches and
Communities. At these meetings, which are organized in a religious
spirit, each explains the teaching of his Communion in greater depth
and brings out clearly its distinctive features. In such dialogue,
everyone gains a truer knowledge and more just appreciation of the
teaching and religious life of both Communions." (sec. 4)

Please come and bring a mind and heart ready to listen and share. I
think this is an exciting opportunity for us to engage what we are

He has also written extensively, and is currently Chaplain to the Dominican Cloistered Nuns in West Springfield, MA and Professor of Homiletics at Holy Apostles Seminary.

Fr. Peter has been the most celebrated speaker at the Living the Catholic Faith Conference here in the Archdiocese of Denver during each of the last three years.

Yesterday, over a sumptious Thanksgiving dinner, I had an epiphany. I realized the four essential food groups of the Thanksgiving dinner: 1.) Turkey, 2.) Mashed Potatoes, 3.) Stuffing, 4.) Cranberry sauce. Now, some of the other guests at table objected, claiming that I had left out pumpkin pie. While pumpkin pie is by all means essential to the Thanksgiving holiday I think it only qualifies as an addendum to the first four food groups. Regardless, I ate all of the above and was most excellently satified with a good ol' American Thanksgiving. Thank God for those pilgrims!

So I've been trying to solve my ugly kitchen problem. The walls are toothpaste green and the landlord won't let us repaint. Soooo...what am I to do? Window treatments are definitely in order. Thanksgiving "break"; Places to Study

I don't know about all of you but I'm spending my Thanksgiving break with my laptop. He and I will have a great time in the library together, creating wonderful papers and making academic music together! If anyone wants to join me for a study break sometime, you're welcome--or if you'd just like to go to Denver Sem for a few hours of quality time with some dusty books and a photocopier, be my guest.

I think we should start a contest for the best places in Denver to study. Here's my list so far:
1. Denver Seminary: the most books (but you can only check out 5), always a spot to study, very bright, open til 10, a little far
2. Denver University Law Library: very quiet, tons of study space, but no theological books at all
3. Iliff Seminary: tons of books (you can check out as many as you want), but not much study space--just a few tables
4. Starbucks on Evans and Franklin: full of students, open til 11
5. Vehr Theological Library - good amt. of books, but little study space, short hours, never open in the evening
6. Denver Public Library 13th St. - Few theological books, but tons of little nooks and crannies to study in, the study tables on the upper floors surrounding the "courtyard" center are highly recommended but parking is drag
7. Caribou Coffee on Hampden near Logan - Nice atmosphere, sometimes hard to find a spot to sit
8. Regis University - a good amt. of theological books, decent amt. of study space, but the furniture is a little...er...unusual, plus lots of undergrads wandering around and most of the computers are on lock down status
9. My room - good lighting, great table, always quiet, but a little distracting
10. Denver University Penrose Library - no theological books, VERY distracting red walls--yuck!, but it is always open til midnight

So I was thinking....(Mark G. really started the thinking process which sprung from Ushpizin) that we should celebrate the Feast of Booths next year as an AI community. The Feast of Booths is on October 6-14 this year (the 15th day of the 7th month on the Jewish calender). You might ask: how should we/could we celebrate the feast of booths. Well, I could think of two options. 1. As Mark first suggested we could celebrate by constructing temporary dwellings (sukkoths) on the grounds of JPII. 2. We could go camping in honor of the feast and celebrate with ritual meals and prayers and such. (sukkoth optional). I'm game for the sukkoth if we can find the materials, but tents might just be a lot easier and still connote the same type of experience.

On another note, we are still waiting for the baby to come! It sholud be any day, but we ahve been saying that for about 3 weeks now. Staci will email the AI community when the baby comes and I will try to blog some pictures. Blessing to all this summer!

It started with a dare.

When it ended early this morning, a naked man was bruised and a man who claimed he was a drill sergeant was under arrest for shooting a gun toward the naked man.

"Just when you thought you had heard everything,'' Ann Arbor Detective Sgt. Jim Stephenson said.

An Ann Arbor couple said they were inside their apartment in the 1500 block of Pauline Boulevard discussing marriage just after midnight. The woman said she wasn't sure if she was ready, and her boyfriend responded that taking risks is an important part of life, police reports said.

To prove his point, the boyfriend hopped out of the first-floor window on a dare and streaked naked across the street, police said. But before he could cross back to the residence, he noticed a couple walking down the sidewalk, so he hid in the bushes to avoid them, reports said.

The 28-year-old Ann Arbor man who happened to be walking his friend home noticed the bushes rustling and feet underneath, so he pulled out his gun and ordered the naked man out, reports said. The naked man ran, and the chase was on.

The man with the gun, who claimed he was an Army drill sergeant, repeatedly ordered the naked man to the ground as he chased after him, threatening to shoot him, reports said. The gunman then fired off a round, and the naked man hit the ground, causing minor injuries, reports said.

A nearby resident called police to report a naked man being chased by a man with a gun, reports said.

Officers soon arrived and arrested the gunman. He does not appear to be in the Army and does not have a permit to carry his .40-caliber handgun, police said. He was lodged at the county jail on charges of aggravated assault and carrying a concealed weapon.

The naked man was treated for minor injuries, but was not arrested.

It's also not known whether the couple plans to marry.

Today, I decided that I needed to be connected to the internet at home. So I searched around and found two companies that could provide it -- Comcast and Qwest. However, there is a problem. With both services, internet would be around $50 per month or more (Comcast, we would have to get a phoneline, Qwest we would not.) So, I did some more researching and I stumbled upon a service called Ricochet. Ricochet is only in the Denver and San Diego areas. It is a wifi service that covers all of Denver. Thus, if you have a laptop in Denver, you can receive internet connection throughout the entire city (for the most part) just like a cell phone (even while driving 70 mph). Also, it is only $25/month. The only set back is that it is a little slower than a cable modem (I would guess cable is 2x/3x as fast), but as far as I can tell it is worth it for the price and range. Also, you must sign a 12-month contract. However, you can try it out for 7 days to see if you like it. Just thought I would throw that out there if you were thinking about purchasing internet for next year. The site is: www.ricochet.com.

I know I have been talking everyone's ear off about The Tipping Point, but I thought I would post some info on it.

Mel Gibson's Apocalypto

Overall, it is pretty mysterious.
The trailer tells you very little.

I have also heard that the language will be some sort of Indian dialect.
Plus, none of the actors have been in American movies before.

My initial thought is that it is critique of American culture, but I really don't know.

What I do know is that it comes out on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception -- Dec 8.

I don't know if it makes me think of Mary necessarily, but the movie don't involve some type of pregnancy -- as you will see in the trailer.

Hey, the "get-away" this weekend at St. Walburga's was awesome. I mentioned to a couple of people that Cardinal Arinze was now "Podcasting" some of his catechetical lessons on the web. They made the above Icon themselves for fun. Pretty sweet. Here is the link and a picture of Arinze with an iPod.

Things that "AI" could stand for

A friend brought to my attention recently that "AI" is a common abbreviation in other fields of knowledge. In psychology, for instance, it could be short for "artificial intelligence".

Unfortunately, in animal science, it is short for "artificial insemination".

I propose a different shorthand for our beloved graduate school. How about "GI" -- short for "Gus Institute"? (And other more obvious, more heroic meanings?) Personally, I will only use the designation "the Institute" from now on.

Cardinal Martini, former archbishop of Milan, now 75 and retired gave an interview to an Italian newspaper, L'Espresso, in which he dissented on abortion, in vitro fertilization and contraception. Ahhhh! The Vatican has yet to respond as the interview was only published yesterday on 4/21/06.
